Action Figures
An action figure is a toy marketed mainly for male youth, while more character based figures marketed for female youth are called dolls. Today, more and more adults buy action figures for collector’s items rather than their fun factor. DC Comics has their own line of collector friendly action figures marketed under the name DC Direct.
Batman
Batman first appeared in 1939 in Detective Comics #27. When young Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed in front of him, he dedicated his life to fighting criminals. As Batman, Bruce Wayne fights to protect Gotham City from the likes of the Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Man-Bat, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and many more. Batman started off as a solo act, but has gained several partners through the years, including Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing. After almost 70 years, thousands of comics, a television series, several films and cartoons, and countless memorabilia, Batman remains one of the most well known and best loved fictional heroes of all times.
Batman Action Figures
In 2008, Mattel released a new line of Batman toys for the movie The Dark Knight. Like the Batman Begins line, The Dark Knight line also featured 5-inch figures with an assortment of Batman figures in various costumes and packed with various accessories, though they were made with new sculpts different from those used in the Batman Begins line. The Dark Knight line also featured a figure for the film’s main villain The Joker, though the figure beared little facial resemblance to Heath Ledger, displaying a more cartoonish look. A Two-Face figure is being produced, but like the Joker figure, it also bears a more cartoonish look than its more gruesome-looking film counterpart.
In a first for Batman movie action figures and Batman toys, a 6-inch line of figures was also produced called The Dark Knight Movie Masters and comprised of action figures of Batman, The Joker, one of Joker’s Thugs, and an unmasked “Bruce as Batman” chase figure. Designed by The Four Horsemen and displaying a much closer level of detail and more articulation than the 5-inch figures, Wave 1 of The Dark Knight Movie Masters were released in stores in May 2008 and were quickly bought up, making finding them in stores extremely difficult for several months. The line’s Joker action figure became very desired among collectors due to Heath Ledger’s death and the relatively small quantity of figures made available. Scalpers were quick to snap up The Joker figures in stores and promptly began selling them on online retailers and auction sites for hefty prices, causing frustration among collectors. A rumored “unofficial recall” made by Mattel added much confusion among collectors and made the value of Movie Masters figures that had already been sold increase even more.
Since then, a second wave of Movie Masters has been released in stores, featuring figures based on Batman and Scarecrow as they appeared in Batman Begins, as well as a Fear Toxin Batman chase figure. More Wave 1 figures were also released, mixed in with shipments of Wave 2 figures. A third wave is said to be in production for release in late 2008 or early 2009.
There are many accessories avalable for the action figures, including replicas of the Batcave and Batman’s Batmobile.
